Abolish Everything? Candidate Explodes In NY

A New York congressional candidate who wants to abolish police, prisons, and borders just won her primary — and even Bill Maher says her views sound more like a fringe extremist than an elected lawmaker.

Story Snapshot

  • Darializa Avila Chevalier won the Democratic primary for New York’s 13th Congressional District despite a trail of radical deleted social media posts.
  • Her archived posts called to abolish police, prisons, and borders, claimed “Israel doesn’t exist,” and said “all deportations are wrong.”
  • Bill Maher publicly criticized her views, sparking a national debate about how extreme the Democratic Party’s left wing has become.
  • Chevalier walked out of a live TV interview when confronted with her old posts, raising serious questions about accountability.

Who Is Darializa Avila Chevalier?

Darializa Avila Chevalier is a 32-year-old democratic socialist who just defeated incumbent Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District Democratic primary. She was backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America. She now represents one of the most left-wing candidates in the country heading into a general election — and her past social media posts have become the biggest story of her campaign.

Between 2018 and 2022, Chevalier posted and reposted content calling for a “world without borders — just like a world without prisons or police.” She also wrote “Yes, literally, abolish the border” and reposted calls to “seize all properties from landlords” and nationalize utilities. She later deleted her entire Twitter account, but archived screenshots were reported by CNN, ABC, and other outlets.[5][8]

Maher Calls Out the Extremism

Bill Maher — a liberal comedian who often criticizes the far left — publicly blasted Chevalier’s positions on his show. His comments triggered national coverage and forced mainstream media to take a closer look at what she actually posted. Conservative outlets like The Hill and The Rubin Report went further, labeling her views “toxic and un-American” and pointing to her ties to a Columbia University campus group that reportedly chanted “Death to America.”[1][2]

Chevalier also called Joe Biden a “war criminal” and a “rapist” in 2020, and posted “Fuck Kamala Harris” in 2021 after Harris made comments about Guatemalan migrants.[3] She has since apologized for those specific remarks, saying she “deeply regrets” them and would not use that language today.[4] But her apology covers the words — not the beliefs behind them.

She Still Believes “All Deportations Are Wrong”

Even after the backlash, Chevalier told reporters she still believes “all deportations are wrong.”[2] She frames this as a legal argument — that punishing someone based on where they were born is a form of discrimination. But to most Americans, opposing all deportations means supporting open borders. That is not a fringe opinion she once held. It is the policy she is running on right now, in 2026, while seeking a seat in the United States Congress.

When a TV interviewer pressed her on her old posts, Chevalier walked out of the live interview.[2] That is not the behavior of someone who has truly reckoned with her past. It looks more like someone who knows her views cannot survive scrutiny. Democratic establishment leaders like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are reportedly uneasy about candidates like Chevalier, fearing she will cost the party swing voters.[3] That concern is well-founded. Voters in her heavily Dominican-American district have also questioned whether her radical nationalism views reflect their community.[2] The far left keeps pushing candidates further from mainstream America — and Chevalier may be the clearest example yet of where that road leads.
